GRIN - Assisting Individuals & Group Crisis Intervention Training

This 3-day course combines ALL of the content of ICISF’s Assisting Individuals in Crisis & Group Crisis Intervention courses.

Course Description

Crisis intervention is not psychotherapy; it is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention that requires specific training. Just as physical first aid is to surgery, crisis intervention is to psychotherapy, often referred to as “emotional first aid.” This course is designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum. It will equip participants with an understanding of a wide range of crisis intervention services for both individuals and groups.

The course outlines the fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and provides participants with the knowledge and tools to conduct several group crisis interventions, including Rest Information Transition Services (RITS), defusings, and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). It also covers the importance of appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary.

This course is suitable for professionals in Business & Industry Crisis Intervention, Disaster Response, Education, Emergency Services, Employee Assistance, Healthcare, Homeland Security, Mental Health, Military, Spiritual Care, and Traumatic Stress fields.

Learning Objectives

  • How to communicate to someone who has been through a crisis situation with active listening skills

  • How to recognize the common psychological reactions people experience in the wake of critical incidents

  • Why the CISM model of assisting individuals in crisis works to lessen the impact of a traumatic event

  • Understand and apply the SAFER-Revised model of individual crisis intervention to support peers

  • The nature and definitions of a psychological crisis and psychological crisis intervention

  • Basic crisis communication techniques

  • Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

  • An understanding of the nature of resistance, resiliency, and recovery in the field of CISM

  • How to reduce the risks of crisis intervention

  • Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)

Three-Day Course

Participants will receive an ICISF Certificate of Attendance for each course that offers general Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from by University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Emergency Health Services Professional and Continuing Education (PACE).
