Try These Essential Oils to Induce Sleep

Jan 07, 2022

One method to help you get to sleep and end anxiety that is popular these days is aromatherapy. Aromatherapy involves ensuring that your surroundings smell nice using essential oils instead of perfumes.

Essential oils are made from leaves, bark, rind, and other parts of plants. They are often added to oils, creams, and other products like shampoo or bath gel. You can simply sniff them right out of the bottle, add to a carrier oil and rub on your skin, use in a diffuser, or add a drop to your bath.

The types of aromas that work for relaxation and sleep are:

  • Lavender Oil
  • Ylang Ylang Oil
  • Chamomile Oil
  • Bergamot Oil
  • Sandalwood Oil
  • Cedarwood Oil
  • Marjoram Oil
  • Clary Sage Oil
  • Rosewater Oil

My favorite is a combination of Lavender Oil and Sandalwood. It works well for my wife and me and is not as expensive as the other oils.

Follow Package Instructions

Whatever oil you choose to use, it's essential (no pun intended) to understand how to use them properly. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there, usually disseminated by unscrupulous sellers. When you buy essential oils, always follow the package instructions for the type you buy. Many of them are dangerous to eat and can even harm your skin if you apply them directly without properly diluting them.

Be Careful Where You Put Them

You can't just take the oils from the bottle and rub them on your body wherever you want to. You need to be careful and not allow them inside your mouth, nose, eyes, or other sensitive parts. Also, most essential oils are so concentrated that they can damage your skin if you don't know how to prepare them for use on your skin.

Buy High-Quality Products

It's imperative to find products that are void of unnecessary additives. Always read the label to find out what's inside. Many people who experience an allergic reaction are really reacting to additional ingredients that they did not think to check. Lots of natural things still aren't really good for you.

Toss When Old

Essential oils deteriorate after about three years. If you don't use them during that time, they will change color or lose their potency. They may even irritate your skin more. If your oil changes in appearance or smell, throw it out. You can ensure they last longer by storing them according to their package instructions.

Use The Right Oils

There are edible oils and non-edible oils. For example, cumin oil is safe for food, but you'll end up with mouth sores if you put that directly in your mouth. So always read the directions and make sure you're using each oil for what it is intended to be used for.

Lastly, talk to your doctor if you're using any alternative treatments that might change how your body absorbs medication. Plus, if you have allergy problems and use essential oils, this is the first place to look. Essential oils do work for many people, but they are not without their critics. However, if you have insomnia and have tried everything else, this might work for you.
